Helping students get to Iceland

As a teacher of 40+ years, some of my fondest memories for myself and I am sure for my students, have taken place not inside but outside of the classroom. A performance of Twelfth Night by the Royal Shakespeare Company, so well-acted and staged that words that had seemed so dry and inaccessible on the page, sprang into life and made sense; a camping trip as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme that took young people out of their comfort zone, tested resilience but forged friendships that will last a lifetime; a poignant and informative day trip (leaving Birmingham airport at 05.30 returning 23.30) to Auschwitz ensuring that the next generation will learn from history in a way that is not always possible just in the classroom.

Thrive Coventry awards group and individual funding to ensure that these and other co-curricular and super-curricular opportunities are accessible to young people in Coventry, who might miss out due to financial constraints. We were recently able to financially support students from Blue Coat School Coventry with their Geography field trip, which undoubtedly enhanced their understanding and engagement with the topics under discussion in the classroom.

If you are a young person living in Coventry that needs support with a co-curricular activity or a group leader or teacher who knows of a young person who would value our support, then please go to our scholarship and small grants page. We look forward to featuring you in future blogs!
